Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Determine job requirements
  2. Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
  3. Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with SOPs
  4. Identify job requirements from specifications, drawings, job sheets or work instructions
  5. Prepare materials for welding
  6. Assemble/align materials to specification, where required
  7. Select, assemble and set up welding equipment and consumables
  8. Assemble and set up welding equipment in accordance with SOPs
  9. Weld joints to Australian Standard 1554 SP or equivalent
  10. Interpret instructions, symbols and specifications, including bead size, bead placement and reinforcement in accordance with weld procedure sheet, if available, and SOPs
  11. Ensure weld conformance
  12. Remove defects with minimum loss of sound metal using correct and appropriate techniques and tools
  13. Complete weld records, where required

fillet and butt in the horizontal, vertical and overhead positions

Materials include one (1) or more of the following:

low carbon steel, plate, pipe, tube and round bar

Fuel gases include one (1) or more of the following:

acetylene

liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)

hydrogen

Equipment includes the following:

cylinders

regulators

hoses

torches

tips

flash back arrestors

Consumables include the following:

appropriate fuel gas

filler rods

fluxes

Preparing materials includes one (1) or more of the following:

pre-heating

setting up of jigs, fixtures and clamps

joint preparation e.g. bevelling
